Dress Code Guide

Core Principles for Attire

  • Elegance and Simplicity Choose simple, elegant attire.

  • Solid, Dark Colors Dark, solid colors work best as they draw the eye to the subjects rather than the clothing. Recommended colors that flatter all complexions include black, royal blue, navy blue, burgundy, and earth shades of green.

  • Modesty and Coverage Aim for sophisticated attire that minimizes exposed skin. Long sleeves are preferred over short sleeves, and jackets, shawls, or other coverings are highly encouraged for both men and women. The brightest area in a portrait creates the greatest visual impact you want that to be your faces, not bare arms.

  • Avoid Distractions Please avoid stripes, heavy graphic patterns, mixing stark dark and light colors within one outfit, and any attire featuring words, logos, or large pictures. Casual attire is not suitable for this studio environment.

Specific Attire Recommendations

Women

  • Formal gowns or dresses that fall below the knee are ideal.

  • Bring shawls, jackets, or other elegant coverings.

  • Darker colors tend to be most flattering for all figures.

Men

  • Men look best in tuxedos or suits. A suit jacket is highly recommended as it yields a much better result in different lighting situations than a shirt alone.

  • Coordinate your tie with other accessories or family members outfits.

  • Wear dark socks preferably black that match or complement your dark shoes.

Coordinating Family and Group Portraits

When multiple subjects are involved, color coordination is essential to a harmonious final image. A mismatched palette e.g., a green dress next to a pink dress, a blue jacket, and a black tuxedo can detract from the portrait unity.

Instead, select a consistent color scheme for the entire group. Ensure every family member adheres to that palette. Keeping everyone in simple, elegant, dark, solid colors consistently yields the most professional and cohesive results.

Preparation and Logistics

  • Dress Fully Ensure your entire outfit is ready, from shoes to classic or treasured jewelry.

  • Prepare Ahead Lay out all clothing the night before your session to minimize stress on the day of the shoot.

  • Studio Arrival You are welcome to change in our studio. If you plan to change at the studio, please arrive to minutes before your scheduled session time. If your session involves many subjects, you might prefer to dress ahead of time and just use the studio for finishing touches.

  • Options Feel free to bring multiple clothing options to the studio. Our artist is available to assist you in selecting the best combination for your portrait.

Our goal is to create a timeless, classic portrait where you are the central focus. The right clothing enhances this effect, providing an elegant, uncluttered backdrop that keeps the attention on the subjects faces and expressions. The guiding principle is to dress in a manner suitable for a formal evening out, such as dining at a fine restaurant or attending a black tie gala.
